The 4 hour plane ride from Indonesia
was a big dose of birth control since we had screaming kids next to
us and behind us. We regretted not buying an extra bag of M&Ms
and a pack of benadryl for these kids, as the parents were totally
unprepared to bribe (or drug) them into silence.
Arriving to Bangkok was pretty
overwhelming. Cabs, cars, tuk-tuks, bikes, and people... EVERYWHERE.
So far, Asia holds up to it's dirty and polluted reputation. However,
the friendly and hardworking people strive to makeup for deep breaths
of air that burn your lungs and eyes. Lucky for us, there was a
vegetarian festival going and we had fun tasting all of the
inexpensive local veggie treats. The street food in Bangkok is
everywhere and pretty tasty. Pad thai, soups, satay, and thai sausage
quickly became some of our favorites. Slices of watermelon sold on
the street make for perfect snacks.
After a long day of dirty canal boat
rides and a lot of walking around with our bags (since we were too
suborn to cab) we finally found the Vietnamese Embassy. We
successfully applied for our Vietnamese visas and paid to expedite.
The process was fairly easy after we overcame the madness and
actually found the place. Brian is officially on his 5th
pair of flipflops since we left home.
Going out for an evening snack was
quite an adventure. It's much easier to wander out and pick up sexual
favors from little boys than it is to order pad thai without peanuts.
Sheeeesh.
Yesterday, we took a 6.5 hour train
ride, a 20 minute tuk-tuk ride, a 3 hour bus ride, and another 20
minute tuk-tuk ride to arrive in Siem Reap, Cambodia. We will explore
more of Thailand when we return to Bankok before flying home to the
United States.
